Welcome!

Welcome to the official blog of the 2011 Fort River Discovery Series! This year, the Hitchcock Center for the Environment and Rushing Rivers Institute, both in Amherst, MA are teaming up to bring greater awareness and appreciation to the Fort River, a unique backyard resource. These two non-profit organizations will be hosting several river presentations throughout the spring that will culminate in the 4th Annual Fort River Celebration Day, held at Groff Park. For a summary of these events, please visit fortriverdiscovery.org.

We kicked off the series on March 24 at the Hitchcock Center with a great talk by the Rushing Rivers scientists about the history of the Fort River and its story today. Piotr, Joe and Allan spoke about river ecology and wildlife, the research they do on rivers, and the history of the role of the Fort River in Amherst. We are looking forward to the next event, a presentation by New England Environmental biologist, Sean Werle, entitled "The Endangered Mussels of the Fort River."
